We Gave this Old Seat a New Lease of Life

This unremarkable looking chair wasn’t just any office chair. It had been with its owner for years, serving an alternative to her wheelchair. It was her daily partner and it bore the marks of years of service: fabric splitting at the seat, a makeshift arrangement of cushions tied with string to fit her unique needs, and perhaps even a faint aroma of time itself.

We’ll admit it: buying a new chair would have been cheaper.

But a new chair is a stranger, an empty slate with no history to share. This old chair? It carried her memories, her routines, her life. The client wasn’t looking for a dramatic transformation; she simply wanted the chair to feel like itself, just renewed.

We started with stripping out the chair of its old fabric and old foam, leaving just its wood core which was still sturdy and in good condition!

We used a high performance fabric for the reupholstery

For the new upholstery, we recommended a high-performance fabric, breathable enough to handle daily use while accommodating her tendency to perspire.

Piping details on the back of the chair

The colour palette stayed familiar—why mess with what works?

An odd looking back cushion

We also custom made a back cushion for her. It’s not the kind of thing you’ll find in a catalog. With a short lumbar support tailored to cradle her lower back and a height that provides full support to her upper spine, the back cushion looks a little unusual, but it fits her like a hug.

The result? A chair that’s no longer worn but still wonderfully hers. It smells new but feels like home, ready for more stories, more days, and maybe a few more hodgepodges of cushions over the years.
